Baku-Ceyhan pipeline faces corrosion threat

14 August 2006 [14:53] - TODAY.AZ
The Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline is facing the threat of corrosion, which could bring about an ecological catastrophe in Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey, the Platform international ecological organisation has announced.

The British Petroleum (BP) Company, the head of the consortium, which built the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline, had to stop oil production at its oil fields in Alaska several days ago because of a rapid corrosion of the oil pipeline, controlled by BP, Kazinform quotes Itar-Tass.

According to the information circulated in London, some U.S.organisations are going to bring a lawsuit against BP for creating a threat to the natural environment of Alaska. At the same time, BP representatives were summoned to the U.S. Congress for attending special hearings on the "rusty oil pipeline."

Mica Mino Pauello, a staff member of the Platform organisation, said that during the building of the oil pipeline in the Caucasus BP had been less concerned over the preservation of the natural environment, than in Alaska. As a result of it, the situation, which took shape in the United States, may be repeated on the territory of Georgia. Platform experts believe that the areas where the oil pipeline has been laid, including unique natural preserves, are now facing the threat of oil pollution.
