13 April 2006 [11:01] - TODAY.AZ
Preparatory works on privatization of the Sumgait Superphosphate Plant under the Mid-Term State Investment Program are underway.

As APA informs referring to the Chair of the Board of the Sumgait Superphosphate Plant Eldar Ismayilov, the annual demand to sulphate acid in the republic is 2-25 thosuand tons at present, and the demand to phosphate and Superphosphate fertilizers is 200 thousand tons. The capacity of the sulphate workshop of the plant is 240 thousand tons, however, last year only 12.785 thosuand tons of sulphate acid was produced.

Mr.Ismayilov noted that without requited investments, the plant will run into serious problem soon: "The plant is experiencing problems in purchasing of raw materials. So, sulphur required for the plant is purchased from Russia and 1 ton of it is sold at $68 in Azerbaijan. However, Russia sells 1 ton of sulphur at $7-8. We buy 1 ton of apatite at $95. Importation of apatite from Tunis or Northern Africa costs $5-7 cheaper than from Russia".

The Head of the plant also stressed that the plant is capable to completely satisfy the demand to fertilizers. According to his words, 1 ton of fertilizer brought from Russia and Ukraine costs $236. "If production of fertilizers is resumed in the plant, this price will decrease to $110-120. Production costs of sulphate acid is $63, and sale price is $72; production costs of Superphosphate is $86, and sale price is $120 at present. $3.95 million is required for purchasing and rehabilitation of equipment and other works in the plant".
