European Tobacco Baku Invests $60m

The largest tobacco producer in the South Caucasus region, European Tobacco Baku, has invested $60 million in Azerbaijan so far, its head, MP Rufat Guliyev has said.

Guliyev told a news briefing on Wednesday that the company's brands, along with sales in the domestic market, are exported to 15 countries in central and western Africa, the Middle East, south-western Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The quality of the cigarettes is not any lower than expensive brands, he said.

Guliyev said the enterprise has produced tobacco products worth 214 million new manats ($222.2m) so far. It has contributed 63.8 manats ($69.3m) to the state budget and non-budget funds. The company head noted that the average salary paid to about 1,000 people employed there makes up $184.

According to AssA-Irada Guliyev continued that European Tobacco Baku has purchased over 1,500 tons of local tobacco over the past six years. Moreover, the enterprise has tackled implementation of a project on the development of tobacco-growing in the country, jointly with the Gabala-Tutun joint stock company, he added.

The factory, which started operation in February 2000, currently produces 24 brands of cigarettes.
