“AzAL” to return AN-140-100 airplane purchased from Ukraine back

28 December 2005 [10:06] - TODAY.AZ
After the AN-140-100 airplane taken off from Baku en route to Aktau crashed, the “AzAL” State Concern will return another AN-140-100 airplane purchased from Ukraine back. APA was informed about it by the sources in the “AzAL” State Concern.
It should be noted that the AN-140-100 airplane produced by Ukraine crashed in Iran last year. The issue on returning the AN-140-100 airplane back was neither confirmed nor refuted in the information given to APA from the press-service of the “AzAL” State Concern. It is noted in the information that the reasons of the crash are currently investigated together with the specialists of the plant producing the airplane who are located in Baku at present. The decision of the administration of the “AzAL” State Concern will depend on the results of the investigations. It should be reminded that “AzAL” received the crashed airplane on Novemebr 27, 2004 and another AN-140-100 airplane was delivered to Azerbaijan from Kharkov in summer of this year.

On July 8, 2004 the director general of “AzAL” Jahangir Asgarov and director general of the Kharkov State Aviation Production Union Pavel Naumenko signed a contract on production of 4 AN-140-100 airplanes for Azerbaijan. Two airplanes have already been purchased on the basis of that contract and because changes are being made to the salon of the third airplane by the request of the Azerbaijani side, the process of delivery of that airplane to Baku was delayed for a while. The airplane should have been brought to Azerbaijan till the end of this year. The sources in “AzAL” told APA that the Azerbaijani side intends to refuse the two airplanes it have to purchase in parallel with returning the AN-140-100 airplane back. It should be noted that each of the airplanes cost Azerbaijan approximately $ 9,1.

APA was informed from the Kharkov State Aviation Production Union that the two airplanes purchased on the basis of the contract had one salon with 52 seats. Because the Azerbaijani side requested the airplane to be produced with two salons, delivery of the third airplane was delayed: “The airplane should have been delivered to Azerbaijan at the end of the year. However, after the known accident this process was stopped. The fourth airplane is being prepared and it was planned to deliver it at the beginning of the year”. At the same time, it was informed from the Kharkov State Aviation Production Union that no official information had entered them on Azerbaijani side’s intention to return the purchased airplane back and to refuse the two airplanes it have to purchase.
