Russia is considering the possibility of supplying coal to Turkey and other countries through Azerbaijan, First Deputy Managing Director of Russian Railways JSC Alexander Misharin said.

He was speaking Sept. 27 in Baku during the 9th Azerbaijan-Russia interregional forum.

“Railroad transportation between Azerbaijan and Russia grew 18 percent in comparison with last year, and exceeded 6 million tons,” Misharin said.

Speaking about the International North-South Transport Corridor (India-Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia-Kazakhstan), he noted that interest in the project is growing.

“Road transportation is also actively developing; it grew more than 31 percent. Air transportation is growing as well,” Misharin said.

The North-South Transport Corridor is designed to connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia, in particular to link the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia. At the first stage, it has been planned to transport six million tons of cargo, and in the future 15-20 million tons of cargo per year through the North-South corridor.

The cargoes will be transported through the territory of India and then through the Persian Gulf, Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia and will be delivered to the Scandinavian states and Northern Europe in just 14 days.
