The foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) discussed the development of political and sectoral cooperation.

The talks were held within the framework of the regular meeting of the Foreign Ministers Council of the GUAM in New York on the margins of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, the organization's secretariat reported.

The ministers considered, in particular, the expansion of cooperation in the areas of trade, transport, combating crime, combating illegal migration and human beings trafficking.

In addition, the Foreign Ministers Council discussed the issues of GUAM cooperation with other states

The issue of preparation of jubilee events on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the organization was also considered.

New York also hosted ministerial meetings in the formats GUAM-U.S. and GUAM-Japan on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

The GUAM format was created by four post-Soviet states in 1997 during the summit of heads of states of the EU in Strasbourg. The member states of the organization are Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the format and four years later withdrew.

In 2006, Ukraine and Azerbaijan announced plans to further increase the GUAM member relations and established its headquarters in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

The GUAM plays an important role in ensuring regional security, as it contributes significantly to the development and strengthening of dialogue between the countries of the region.

Currently Georgia is chairing the organization.
