Azerbaijan’s carpets mesmerize everyone with their majestic beauty, fascinating colors and variety of drawings. It is not coincidence that in November 2010, the Azerbaijani carpet was proclaimed a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage by UNESCO.

To preserve this tradition and revive Azerbaijan’s weaving traditions, the state-run Azerkhalcha Company plans to open 9 branches in country’s regions by the end of 2017.

The first branch of Azerkhalcha, established under the presidential decree in May 2016, was opened in the front zone - Horadiz settlement of the Fizuli region.

The branch in Horadiz represents the Karabakh carpet-making school, which is one of the historic centers of Azerbaijan`s carpet-making industry.

The branch, opened in November 2016, occupies a total area of 585 square metres and employs 150 carpet weavers and 10 administrative workers.

The construction of the branches in other regions has been already begun, he added. At the initial stage the branches of Azerkhalcha are also expected to open in Agdam, Tovuz, Aghstafa, Qazakh, Shamkir, Quba, Ismayilli, Khachmaz regions.

Ancient Azerbaijani carpets are stored at the White House, the U.S. State Department, and many other museums across the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Museum of Art in Philadelphia, as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

A new carpet museum, designed in the form of a rolled carpet, opened in the Baku Seaside Park in 2014 and all carpets were transferred to this museum.
