Azerbaijan, Georgia consider opportunities for joint delivers

The opportunities for joint deliveries were discussed at a meeting of Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Shahin Mustafayev with Economy and Sustainable Development Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia, who is on a visit to Baku, on June 14.

The ministers of the two neighboring countries discussed opportunities for joint exports to third countries.

They also considered a joint presentation of the transit opportunities of Azerbaijan and Georgia in China, expansion of trade, development of ties in the fields of agriculture, ICT, tourism, use of the capabilities of the Azerbaijani satellite, holding a tripartite forum in Ganja in the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Iran format and other issues.

Highlighting the high level of relations between the two countries, Mustafayev said that almost 280 companies with Georgian capital are operating in the country, and in Georgia there are more than 200 companies with Azerbaijani capital.

Mustafayev stressed that Azerbaijan invested $3.4 billion in the economy of Georgia and the country has been ranking first in terms of investments in Georgia for many years. In turn, Georgian investments in Azerbaijan amounted to $72 million.

Highly appreciating the level of Azerbaijan's investments in the Georgian economy, Gakharia noted that both countries have great potential for expanding economic cooperation.

The trade turnover with Georgia in January-May 2017 amounted to $232.2 million, according to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, and $202.87 million of this amount went to export to Georgia. The main products of Azerbaijani exports to Georgia are natural gas, oil, electricity, building materials, etc.

The day before President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by the Georgian minister.

The head of state hailed the successful development of Azerbaijan-Georgia relations, saying the two countries maintain active cooperation in many areas and support each other.

Speaking on Azerbaijan’s investments in Georgia and Azerbaijani companies’ activities in the country, the head of state stressed the importance of determining the ways of increasing the bilateral trade. Hailing the successful implementation of global projects in transport and energy fields, the head of state noted that Azerbaijan and Georgia demonstrate a very sound approach on the realization of these projects along with other partners.

Gakharia said cooperation in the economic area is successfully developing, adding that it is well evidenced by a 49 percent growth in the bilateral trade in four months of this year.

They exchanged views on prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, investment, transport, tourism and agriculture.
