The advertising of wine products may be limited in Azerbaijan, as a relevant bill was discussed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Agricultural Policy.

The amendments to the law “On viticulture and winemaking” propose to prohibit advertising of wine, the alcohol content of which is more than 5 percent, on television, covers of periodicals, on the main pages of Internet resources, open spaces.  The advertising of wine products regardless of the alcohol content percentage may be banned in transport, printed publications, audio and video materials provided for minors.

Promotions, accompanied by the distribution and tasting of wine, are proposed to be allowed only at retail outlets and in the tasting rooms of specialized exhibitions. According to the bill, when selling wine, the alcohol content of which is more than 5 percent, it is forbidden to give any gifts. Also, it is forbidden to provide wine as a gift when purchasing any goods.

The advertising of wine, the alcohol content of which is more than 5 percent, should be accompanied by a warning about the harmfulness of excessive consumption of alcohol. This inscription should occupy at least 10 percent of the advertising space.

It is also proposed to allow the promotion of wine, which has a special certificate. The advertisement should reflect the number of the certificate, the date of issue and the body that issued it.

Under the current law “On advertisement” it is forbidden to distribute advertising of alcoholic beverages on radio and in telecasts from 07:00 to 22:00, on covers of periodicals, the title pages of magazines, in educational, sports organizations, religious buildings and structures.
