A new phase of construction of the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), the core pipe forming the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), has been launched in Turkey’s west.

Ihlas news agency reported that the new phase envisages construction of the pipeline’s 68 km section and the work is planned to be completed within six months.

The steel pipes produced in Turkey have been delivered from the country’s Osmaniye province to Bandirma Port via railway and have been transported to the logistics center in Gonen district of Balikesir province.

Turkey intends to contribute to its energy security and that of Europe through realization of TANAP.

Saltuk Duzyol, head of TANAP consortium earlier said that the construction process is completed by almost 55 percent, mentioning that some 19 underground passages have so far been built as part of the project.

TANAP project envisages transportation of gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field to the western borders of Turkey. The length of TANAP is 1,800 kilometers with the initial capacity of 16 billion cubic meters.

TANAP shareholders are Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR (58 percent), BOTAS (30 percent) and BP (12 percent).
