Baku hosts seminar on results of FAO project realization in Azerbaijan

A seminar on results of the project on Steady Management of Pastures in Azerbaijan, implemented within FAO programme (UN`s Food and Agriculture Organization ), has been held in Baku.

The event was addressed by Deputy Agriculture Minister Bahram Aliyev, chief of FAO office in Baku Tarana Bashirova and FAO expert Hafiz Muminjanov who stressed the importance of the project, and pointed out to prospects of relations between Azerbaijan and FAO.
The speakers emphasized the importance of pastures in agrarian sector of the country, also spoke about the State Programme on Efficient Use of Summer-Winter Pastures, Hayfields and Prevention of Desertification.

Azerbaijan is a member of FAO since October 20, 1995. During this period, several projects on national and regional levels by FAO were implemented within the Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) and the delegations of the Azerbaijani Government participated in several FAO meetings.

FAO projects being implemented in Azerbaijan includes: project on Strengthening Capacity in Inventory of Land Cover and Land Use by Remote Sensing, on Strengthening the Phytosanitary Capabilities, as well as Preparation of Regional Programme on Food Security Project, Strengthening the Transboundary Animal Disease Diagnosis, Surveillance and Control Capacities.

In January 2006. FAO approved another project called Capacity Building for the Recovery and Management of the Sturgeon Fisheries of the Caspian Sea covering Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and allocated $380,000 to finance it.

In order to intensify the mutual cooperation between FAO and the Republic of Azerbaijan, FAO established a National Representative in Azerbaijan on December 2002.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads international efforts to defeat hunger by helping developing countries and countries in transition to modernize and improve their agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and to ensure food security for all.
FAO`s activities comprise four main areas: providing technical advice and assistance; collecting, analyzing and disseminating information on food, nutrition, agriculture, fisheries and forestry; offering independent advice to governments on agricultural policy; and providing a neutral forum where governments, international organizations and NGOs can meet to discuss food and agricultural issues.
