Baku-Tbilisi-Kars to up cargo transportation

 Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will boost the volume of cargo transportations 2.5-fold, Azerbaijani Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov has said.

He said the construction of the railway would be completed in the second half of 2013.
The Minister noted the volume of cargo transportation on the new route would amount to 5 million tons on the first stage.

“The figure will be increased to 10 million tons on the second stage, and reach 15 million tons on the final third stage. Upon completion of the project and reconstruction, the volume of cargo transportation in this direction will hit 50 million tons.”

Construction of a new 105 km-long railway line is planned as part of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project. In addition, Akhalkalaki-Marabda-Tbilisi railway section in Georgia is going to be reconstructed, which will increase its carrying capacity to 15 million tons of cargo a year. Construction of a station in Akhalkalaki to transfer tracks from Georgian track to European is also planned.
