European Commission not changed position on Caspian gas

06 June 2012 [15:12] - TODAY.AZ
Despite Europe decided to increase gas supplies from Russia, the European Commission's (EC) position on Caspian gas has not been changed, a source in the EC told Trend on Wednesday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin
during the talks in Berlin last week discussed the possibility of doubling the capacity of Nord Stream to include the third and fourth lines running under the Baltic Sea.

Answering the question whether this will affect Europe's willing to buy gas from Caspian region, the source said that "the development of the Southern Gas Corridor remains a Commission priority as it allows for diversification of EU's gas supplies."

"The aim is to create a direct link to one of the largest deposits of gas in the world," he added.

The Southern Gas Corridor' is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It is designed to diversify the routes and sources of supply and thereby increase the energy security of the EU.
