Azerbaijan eyes second space satellite

Azerbaijani Space Affairs Council chaired by academician Arif Pashayev discussed creating the remote sensing satellite - Azerbaijan's second space satellite, Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry said on Tuesday.

The second satellite, which is scheduled to be launched in 2015, will be low-orbiting and used for earth's remote sensing, cartographic work, as well as geological studies. Arif Pashayev stressed the importance of launching remote sensing satellites into the orbit and gave recommendations concerning work in this direction.

During the meeting the participants also discussed current issues on the implementation of the project to launch the first telecommunications satellite Azerspace, construction of ground spacecraft control stations, as well as personnel preparedness.

The Satellite is expected to be launched in late 2012. Azerspace's manufacturer is Orbital Sciences Corporation.
