Armenian bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan: "Armenians in Georgia are treated better than Azerbaijanis"

09 February 2008 [14:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Armenian community of Tbilisi voted for Mikhail Saakashvili at the recent presidential elections.

The due announcement was made by head of Georgian eparchy of Armenian Apostle Church, Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan.

He said the majority of Javakheti population supported Mikhail Saakashvili.

"We try to maintain normal relations with the government until it is effective. M.Saakashvili at least does his best to keep his promise. I am sure that Georgia is really anxious about the problem of Javakh, as well as other regions. It would not be correct to say that nothing is done. Something has already been done: roads are being restored, in particular, Akhaltsikhe-Batumi railroad has already been fully repaired.

Last year the state budget allocated funds for the repair of Armenian schools. It is planned to open the Georgian-Armenian University in Akhalkalaki. Of course, this is not enough, but we hope that the attitude of the government towards the Armenian community will soon improve", the bishop said.

He noted that the attitude of Georgians to Armenians has recently improved. "The number of publications against Armenians has recently declined in the Georgian mass medias and we consider it to be a positive step. Moreover, Armenians are treated better in Georgia than Azerbaijanis. Azerbaijanis, residing in Georgia always complaint to Baku powers that their problems are neglected.

Armenian powers do not admit such a possibility. We receive textbooks, methodical literature. However, we would like the teachers of Armenian schools to raise their skills in Yerevan. The Armenian Diaspora is better organized now. The Armenian Eparchy maintains permanent contact with the Armenian embassy to Tbilisi. We have set the Center of Armenian culture. As for the statement that Armenians in Istanbul live better than Armenians in Tbilisi, it could be true from the financial point of view. However, we are more free politically", Mirzakhanyan said.
