Decision on talks for transmission of Russian TV channels in Azerbaijan depend on the governments

17 May 2007 [22:18] - TODAY.AZ
"It is competence of governments to give decisions on starting negotiations on broadcasting Russian TV channels in Azerbaijan. As far as I know, there is no such decision yet," Chairman of Azerbaijan National Television and Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramli told.

According to him, the parties will reach agreement on it that will lose its importance in two years.

"Because cable TV, Internet TV and satellite TV are getting accessible for people year by year. That is why, both Russia and Azerbaijan should accept the world standards. That is why, I think there is no need for common agreement to reach on this issue. I have the same view about Turkish TV channels too. Turkey should also pay money for broadcast of its channels here. With time people will be able to watch dozens of both Turkish and Russia TV channels by digital transmission."

Maharramli said if the broadcasting of TV channels are of great importance for Russia then it should accept some terms, APA reports.

"If Russia covers the broadcasting expenditures of AZTV in Russia we can create the same opportunities for Russian TV channels."

The NTRC chairman added as there are no talks on it Russia's terms is unknown for him.

Transmission of Russia's ORT and RTR, Turkey's Samanyolu TV channels will be suspended in Azerbaijan from July 10 due to the expiry of the corresponding agreements.
