US Department of State issues statement about media freedoms in Azerbaijan

01 December 2006 [10:40] - TODAY.AZ
US Department of State Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey made a statement about media freedom in Azerbaijan.

He said that the United States is concerned by the Government of Azerbaijan's moves to limit press freedoms, APA reports.

"By ordering independent television and radio station ANS to cease broadcasts and by evicting independent Azadliq newspaper and Turan news service from their shared location, the government is seriously impeding the ability of independent journalists to work in. The United States closely monitors media freedoms and the human rights situation in Azerbaijan. We call on the Government of Azerbaijan to honor its commitment to democracy and freedom of the press by allowing all three media outlets to continue operations while negotiations on regulatory and licensing compliance are resolved in a manner that upholds the rule of law," he said.
