WMO highlights water's role in NDCs at COP29

Azernews reports that this was stated by Stefan Uhlenbruck, WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Director for Hydrology, Water, and Cryosphere, spoke at a COP29 roundtable on "Water for Climate: Integrating Water Solutions in NDCs and NAPs – Biodiversity, Water Resources, and Climate Interactions."

He emphasized that carbon footprint reduction and absorption measures in NDCs are frequently tied to intensive water use.

Uhlenbruck shared findings from 33 years of data using advanced hydrology models, revealing that 2023 would be drier than average. For example, the Caspian Sea’s water level continues to drop, while drought in the Great Horn of Africa has caused migration and a food crisis, though rainfall later provided some relief.

The analysis shows how changes in global precipitation and atmospheric conditions impact water flow, essential for adaptation plans under NDCs. Drought has also lowered reservoir levels, with global data showing inflows to large reservoirs below average, creating significant challenges in water management.

COP29, hosted in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, is the largest event in the country’s history, with a key focus on achieving an ambitious climate finance target.
