Switzerland ready to organize a meeting of Azeri, Armenian presidents

Switzerland is ready to organize a meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents, the Swiss Foreign Minister, Micheline Calmy-Rey, stated on Thursday after a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku.

According to Micheline Calmy-Rey, opening of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Bern contributed to intensification of bilateral relationships between the two countries. The Swiss government also plans to open its Embassy in Baku, Trend informs.

Micheline Calmy-Rey announced her government's interests in the expansion of trade-economic relationships with Azerbaijan, in particular, in the sphere of investments. Agreements on mutual protection of investments, as well as on evasion from double taxation, signed in Baku will open new opportunities for intensification of Swiss companies' activities in Azerbaijan, she underlined.

Micheline Calmy-Rey said that the Swiss government also plans to sign an agreement on technical assistance, which envisages assistance to Azerbaijan for the improvement of socio-economic situation of population, appraisal of economic situation in the country, as well as delivery of humanitarian assistance.

"Switzerland, as an OSCE Minsk Group, supports the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict on the base of international law and principles," she stated. "We are ready to offer necessary facilities for conduct of talks of the presidents of the conflicting countries in Geneva," the FM stated.

Concerning the Khojali tragedy Micheline Calmy-Rey said that her country was always against of any type of crime against the mankind. "The human rights assume special importance for Switzerland," she underlined. "We back the protection of human rights."

Mammadyarov voiced his satisfaction with the talks and noted that they discussed all aspects of bilateral cooperation. Azerbaijan is interested in expansion of economic relationships with Switzerland and ready to put offer every facility for better activities of the Swiss companies in Azerbaijan.
