Azerbaijani political expert: Armenia should perceive European Parliament resolution as a signal

24 May 2010 [13:15] - TODAY.AZ
“Actually, I do not really understand why there is hysteria in Yerevan," Azerbaijani political expert Rasim Agayev said commenting on hysteria in Yerevan over the European Parliament resolution on South Caucasus.

"The European Parliament document essentially repeats what was said in four UN resolutions adopted previously. So far, the European Parliament, OSCE and other international organizations pretended that nothing had happened,” the expert added.

“The European countries have adopted all kinds of resolution about the "Armenian genocide", offered us to start economic cooperation with Armenia to help Armenia to come to its senses,” he said.

"So, I do not understand why Armenian is in anxiety. At the same time I find the answer to this in the fact that the European Parliament’s firm stand is a serious political blow to Armenia. I think no matter how Armenia is obstinate, the international community realizes that it is obstinacy of the Armenian side that hinders to address problems associated with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Armenian-Turkish normalization," the expert noted.

"Armenia’s political position is becoming vulnerable. This happens due to the U.S. willingness to improve situation around Armenia and to eventually move further to the South Caucasus,” Agayev said.

“European countries have the same worries since Europe wants to be involved in this process and move towards the Caspian basin, as the future energy security of Europe will largely depend on resources of the region. So, Europe wants to play an independent role in the region and therefore puts pressure on those to show unreason,” the expert underscored.

"Armenia should perceive the European Parliament resolution as a signal to be reasonable,” he added.

"But do not think any sanctions will be applied to Armenia soon. Such documents may exert pressure on Armenia. But no sanctions will be imposed any time soon,” the expert said.
