EU ambassador: Absence of agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkey on gas prices does not present serious problem for Nabucco project

07 April 2010 [09:44] - TODAY.AZ
Absence of an agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkey on gas prices is not a serious problem for the implementation of the Nabucco project, said the EU ambassador to Azerbaijan Roland Kobia.

"Bilateral agreements between Azerbaijan and Turkey are welcomed, but for the transit of gas through the Nabucco and the gas from the second stage of Shah Deniz field, everything is ready and was reflected in the inter-governmental agreement. We do not believe this is the main obstacle in implementing the project," Kobia said to press conference on April 6.

An inter-governmental agreement was reached last year in Ankara, said the ambassador, and it contains all the conditions for gas transit. The South Corridor project, which includes the construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline, will be discussed in Baku during the visit of EU Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger. Oettinger will make a three-day visit to Azerbaijan on April 15.

Nabucco is a mutually beneficial project, as will bring gas to Europe and will provide new routes, and at the same time, it will give Azerbaijan an opportunity to diversify its energy customers," said Kobia.

South Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for EU, which aims to diversify routes and sources of supply and thereby increase the energy security of European countries.
