Akbar HasanovDay.Az writerAny unbiased and honest assessment of realities in Armenia is fraught with increased national pessimism in this country.A process of disillusion and realizing the sad reality has begun in Armenia at a time when a wave of euphoria around the Turkish-Armenian protocols which the Armenian authorities tried to present as Armenia’s unprecedented diplomatic victory to its residents have subsided. This is the reality that Armenia is not a player in the "soccer diplomacy", but an object in the game, which is kicked as a ball. The real players here are holders of a sport title in this geopolitical confrontation.
De-facto stateDespite relatively short time has passed since signing of Turkish-Armenian protocol, an increasing number of members of Armenian society has realized that the Armenian authorities are cheating the people banally, arguing that the process of Turkish-Armenian reconciliation has nothing to do with return of Azerbaijan’s occupied territories, committing the occupier country to make concessions.
Thus, former Armenian Foreign Minister Alexander Arzumanyan said that the protocols will be ratified after a breakthrough in resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. He was commenting on the parallel development of ratification of the Armenian-Turkish protocols with the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
Chairman of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Ken Hachikyan expressed his views even in a more hysterical manner calling Armenians to choose survival rather than to surrender.
He said Armenia is forced to accept the Madrid principles, which puts up "Armenian" land for auction in exchange for possibility that Azerbaijan will accept "the status of Karabakh" in future. "We must oppose giving away lands that the protocols imply and the Madrid principles,” Khachikyan said. He noted that this is certainly a way to the unconditional surrender of Armenia.
Finally, here is the last statement. “Protocols were signed between the United States and Turkey, but not between Turkey and Armenia in Zurich and normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations can not continue without a "powerful external guarantee.” This idea was voiced by one of the most ardent oppositionists of Turks and political scientist Igor Muradyan.
All these statements demonstrate deep national pessimism that has engulfed the world Armenians. We have already foreseen and suggested presence of this phenomenon in advance. It was originally clear that Armenia has no resources but to offer itself to be temporarily used by superpowers. Such actions by Armenia which are offensive for any independent state coincided with the desire of superpowers, especially the United States, to solve their own geopolitical goals in the South Caucasus region.
I did not mentioned in vain the methods offensive for any independent state, which the Armenian authorities use. The very nature of these actions eloquently demonstrates de facto absence of Armenia on world’s geopolitical map. It exists only de jure.
Realization of this deplorable fact is fraught with increased national pessimism in this country. Growing number of Armenians would think that even a pseudo-independence of the Republic of Armenia has not brought any real benefits: the population still lives in poverty which is particularly unpleasant, while Azerbaijan prospers day by day. Cynicism and arrogance of the Armenian oligarchy: Armenia is not respected as an independent state and they will have to return the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
The processes will eventually lead to considerable complication of political situation in Armenia when an attempt to resist a common sense that proves Armenia’s actual lack of independence and promotes growing national depression will be sublimated as an attempt to overthrow the existing government by force.
Indeed, it will never solve the problems that now Armenia faces. There will be a banal redistribution of property under nationalist slogans. Again it will take years to ensure that the Armenian society regained its sight and then again be plunged into a state of progressing national depression, which could not survived without loss of de jure independence.
