Azerbaijan expresses strong protest to Iranian ambassador

07 October 2009 [08:31] - TODAY.AZ
ran`s ambassador in Baku Mohammadebagir Behrami has been summoned to Azerbaijan`s foreign ministry to receive a formal protest after a video and article featuring distorted information about Azerbaijan`s domestic and foreign policy had appeared on websites of Sahar TV Station of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, IRIB.

Azeri deputy foreign minister Vagif Sadigov handed over the protest note to the Iranian envoy, saying “the material on the websites grossly insulted Azerbaijan`s national flag, intentionally distorted its state policy and launched false accusations against the country`s state and government officials and members of parliament”.

Behrami was told the Azerbaijani side “voices an extreme concern over the fact such a biased material has been spread by the Iranian media”.

The Azeri deputy foreign minister said “this is not the first such case, although Azerbaijan has repeatedly voiced its concern”.

“However, recently the biased, distorted and insulting material against Azerbaijan has been appearing more and more frequently to have overstepped the boundaries,” added Sadigov.
The Iranian ambassador was told “this can seriously damage the relationship between the two countries, and Iranian authorities must investigate all these cases to further inform the Azerbaijani side about the investigation results”.

Sadigov also asked the ambassador to tell the Iranian authorities “to take necessary steps to prevent such cases”.

Behrami told the Azeri deputy foreign minister he would inform relevant authorities in Iran about “the meeting and the protest note I`ve been handed over”.
