Azerbaijani MPs differ in opinions on possible ratification of Armenia-Turkey protocols

28 September 2009 [14:16] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani members of parliament predicted ratification of an agreement on establishment of the diplomatic relations with Armenia at the Turkish parliament in a different way.
"The Turkish prime minister's statements both in Turkey and at the U.N meetings, as well as the discussion over establishment of the diplomatic relations with Armenia at a meeting with Obama, is evidence that Turkish political elite have made a decision on the Armenian issue. The agreement is expected to be ratified by the parliament due to the fact that Turkish political elite holds majority at the parliament," Deputy Chairman of the pro-government Ana Vatan Party Zahid Oruj said.

The Turkish prime minister said in an exclusive interview with Trend News that Turkey and Armenia will sign a deal to establish diplomatic ties on Oct. 10.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that the deal would be signed by the countries' foreign ministers, but it must be ratified by the countries' parliaments before it takes effect.

Oruj said there are some milestones that prevent Azerbaijan from taking strict measures. "The fact that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict occupies one the important places at the Turkey-Armenia negotiations, is one of the reasons choking Azerbaijan off making strict protests. The documents may reflect this issue or there might be another document. Currently, it is difficult to predict," Oruj added.

Azerbaijan should build an alternative policy in case Turkey takes steps, Chairman of the pro-opposition Great Establishment Party Fazil Gazanfaroglu said.

"The adoption of this document is not important. Armenia does not have political will to complete this process. Turkey also does not intend to complete it. Definite process began to gain support of the U.S and France and neither Turkey not Armenia are able complete this process," the MP added.

Ratification of the agreement on establishment of the diplomatic relations with Armenia at the Turkish parliament is impossible, Gazanfaroglu said.
