Establishming naval base should not be considered result of differences between Azerbaijan,Turkmenistan: ambassador

"One should not consider Turkmen President's statement about establishment of a naval base on the Caspian Sea a result of differences between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan", the diplomat said.

The ambassador said Turkmenistan has an agreement with Europe to supply its gas for several pipelines, and, accordingly, any transport requires ensuring of supplies security.

"Turkmenistan is a peace-loving country. So, taken actions should be considered positively, but not negatively," the ambassador noted.

Turkmenistan plans to create a naval base on the Caspian Sea in the nearest future, the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the enlarged meeting of the State Security Council on August 30.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed the heads of military and law enforcement ministries and departments "to effectively combat the smugglers, terrorists, and any other forces which will attempt to violate the state maritime border of Turkmenistan, or to create an unstable situation there."

Turkmenistan has not yet defined the Caspian Sea borders  with other states. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia have no claims to one another as to dividing the bottom of the Caspian Sea.

There are both bilateral and trilateral agreements between these countries. The parties have also agreed to determine the coordinates of the median line. The issue is yet to be agreed with just two countries - Turkmenistan and Iran - due to which the status of the Caspian Sea has not yet been defined so far.
