02 April 2009 [13:46] - TODAY.AZ
“Azerbaijan has lived with the tragedy of war for too long. All of Azerbaijan has suffered pain form the Nagorno Karabakh conflict”, said Terry Davidson, US Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer at the presentation of the “Dirchalish” Social & Psychological Rehabilitation Center for Youth’ diploma to US ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse on Thursday. The diplomat said the United States has long been concerned about the suffering of peaceful people from the mines. “Over the past decade, we have provided $15 million in assistance to ANAMA for its work in clearing mines and educating the public about the dangers of mines.

The “Dirchalish” Center held an event on the occasion of April 4, the International day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action and presented diplomas to Ambassador Anne Derse, Health Minister of Azerbaijan Oqtay Shiraliyev and chairman of the 16th medical social examination commission. Director of the “Dirchalish” Center Islam Bakhshaliyev said that Anne Derse organized the travel of 30 disabled people to the United States last November. They were familiarized with the situation of disabled people in America and the US laws protected the rights of disabled people. Envera Selimovic, DPI Representative of the UN Office in Azerbaijan gave information about the history of this day. “Various UN agencies, led by UNDP and UNICEF are closely cooperating with the National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA). I have visited Fizuli mine field and I also took part in the roundtable with mine survivors in Tovuz region”, said Selimovic.
