The results of the Azerbaijani referendum, which enables one and the same person to run for president for more than two consecutive terms, will allow the republic to continue successful reforms, Russian parliament's International Affairs Committee deputy chairman Leonid Slutskiy said in his interview with ITAR-TASS.
He said plebiscite in Azerbaijan showed first of all unprecedented support of population for incumbent president Ilham Aliyev.
"Azerbaijani President ensured sustainable development of the country's economy. He successfully realized poverty combat program and eliminated humanitarian crisis caused by the Karabakh war. Millions of people who were left homeless were re-settled and provided with jobs," Russian MP said.
Slutskiy rejected Western statements which say that Constitutional amendments violate democratic principles. "Each country has its own way of democracy. Western-European and American samples of democracy are not acceptable in the Caucasus region," he said.
Azerbaijani citizen voted in the referendum to eliminate restrictions banning one and the same individual from running for presidency for more than twice. Amendments to 29 articles were supported by about 90 percent of population.
