Yuri Merzlyakov: "The aim of the visit is to study opinions of the Karabakh conflict parties and develop a new proposal" - UPDATED

According to Novosti-Azeraijan, OSCE Minsk Group co-chair of Russia Yuri Merzlyakov arriving in Baku, announced that there are objective chances for the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh but this is hampered by subjective factors prompting difficult decisions.

"The resolution of the conflict is hampered only by subjective factors, whose settlement depends on the political will of the parties. But for this purpose it is necessary to adopt difficult decision. When it happens there will appear "a golden opportunity", noted Merzlyakov commenting on the statement of a special rapporteur of the OSCE chairman on the Karabakh conflict Goran Lennmarker about "the golden opportunity" which appeared in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict.

At the same time he added that he can not yet speak of the existence of such an opportunity now.

"The aim of the visit to the region is to study opinions of the parties to the conflict and develop a new proposal to be presented to the sides again. Therefore, we do not rule out that after visiting Armenia we will return to Azerbaijan", said Merzlyakov.

As for the next meeting of Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Merzlyakov added that this issue will be discussed at the meeting with the presidents of both countries.

"But now during the meeting we will discuss issues to be discussed at the next meeting of the presidents as well as the venue and date of the meeting", noted the Russian co-chair.

As for the Khojaly tragedy, Merzlyakov said the situation has changed and this issue must be studied by historians.

"But the main task we face is to settle the conflict and remove the conflict implications", concluded the Russian diplomat.

According to the press service for the Foreign ministry of Azerbaijan on Friday Foreign Minister of the country Elmar Mamedyarov will meet with co-chairs.

During the visit to Baku the mediators of the Prague negotiation process on the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict will be received by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

The US co-chair of the Minsk Group Matthew Bryza is expected to arrive in Baku tonight.
