Latif Gandilov: "Today the West is paying attention to the countries, which may lay a foundation for the Nabucco project"

22 January 2009 [15:27] - TODAY.AZ
Today the West is paying attention to the countries, which may lay a foundation for the Nabucco project, said Azerbaijani ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in Kazakhstan Latif Gandilov, speaking about energy hopes of the West.
He said western countries are displaying a great interest to our countries on the background of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

"We see that the West is paying attention to the countries, which may lay a foundation for the Nabucco project, including Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan".

As for the opinion that the hydrocarbon reserves of these Caspian states are much lower than of Russia the ambassador noted:

"No one sets the aim of calculating the energy reserves. I think it is an incorrect approach to the issue. The export potential of these countries should be taken into account. Their potential is not challenged by anyone... I do not want to comment on someone's opinion but I can assess others' attitude towards our potential. I think this problem should be viewed as that".

Speaking about Kazakhstan's intention to transport a part of the energy sources in the western direction, bypassing Russia, Gandilov noted that Kazakhstan may join a new project in case it is real.

"If not, what can be spoken of? With creation of the transport infrastructure Kazakhstan will have an opportunity to transport its gas via Azerbaijan. In this case Kazakhstan should not reject an opportunity of transporting oil via Azerbaijan", concluded the ambassador.
