Vasili Istratov: "Russia respects the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan"

"There are no changes in Russia's attitude towards the previously declared position of respect towards the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan", said the ambassador Tuesday.

He said the declaration, signed in July of this year between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Russia Ilham Aliyev and Dmitri Medvedev, "does not lose its power in any sense".

Commenting on the interference of the Russian troops in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, Istratov called it is "uneasy, complicated, forced but it is the only possible way out in the current circumstances".

"The current decision concerns the definite situation, established in the region in the result of a military operation of Georgian powers in South Ossetia, initiated on August 8 of this year. It is applicable to a definite situation, established in definite places", said the diplomat.
