Gia Khukhashvili: "Since the first day of the conflict Azerbaijan has supported Georgia more than any other country"

22 August 2008 [15:03] - TODAY.AZ
"Since the first day of the conflict Azerbaijan has supported Georgia more than any other country", said independent Georgian expert Gia Khukhashvili.
Speaking about damage caused to Georgia by the said war, he said that it is difficult to speak of definite figures and consequences, but it is clear that the damage was caused both for the short-term and long-term perspective.

"As for the long-term prospects, Georgia has great problems, which started before the conflict. There was a certain tension in the banking and construction economic sectors. We have nothing more".

According to him, it is still possible to hamper the negative developments in the country's economy by administrative methods.

"The direct damage, caused to country's economy, is great: the military infrastructure of Georgia has been fully damaged, thousands of new refugees emerged, which worsens the social situation in the country dramatically. It all occurs on the background of extremely weak economy, which is not functioning at all at the moment. Georgia will not be able to cope with this hard situation without wide support".

According to him, the situation is even more absurd as Russian companies control supply of electricity and water in Tbilisi, while Russian tanks stand 30 kilometers to Tbilisi.

"Great damage is caused to Georgia as a player in transit transportations due to the idle railroad. This may affect Georgia in the long-term perspective, as most transporters would not want to transit their cargo via Georgia. Azerbaijan also suffers, though it has not been involved in the conflict. But we will have to cope with this situation together. I want to say that without saying anything about the conflict, Azerbaijan assists to Georgia even more than those who render moral assistance to Georgia from microphones, said independent Georgian expert Gia Khukhashvili.
