Miklos Haraszti, OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media, held a press conference in the framework of the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Mr. Haraszti touched upon the state of freedom of media in Azerbaijan and stressed that violence against journalists should be rooted out.
He stated that violence against journalists mostly remains unpunished.
He noted that 5 journalists were released from jailby the pardon decree of the President in December, 2007.
Azerbaijan should pass this stage.
Mr. Haraszti noted that he had discussions on the state of media in Azerbaijan with Terry Davis, CoE Secretary General, Thomas Hammarberg, CoE Commissioner for Human Rights, and Pier Sjogren, Ambassador of AGO Group, and said they will call on official Baku to prevent criminalization of journalism.
