No problem regarding journalists' security in Azerbaijan - Interior Minister

01 June 2007 [07:43] - TODAY.AZ
There is no problem regarding journalists' security in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Interior Minister Ramil Usubov said while commenting on some journalists' seeking asylum abroad.

Minister said that security of all Azerbaijanis is under control of law-enforcement bodies.

"It has always been so. There is no threat to journalists in Azerbaijan. There are some facts like in every country. Criminal case has been launched on these facts, investigations are being carried out and criminals are punished. There is no problem in this field," Minister said.

He also commented on editor of Gundalik Azerbaijan newspaper Uzeyir Jafarov's statement "One of the assaulters was officer of Yasamal district police Nabi Rajabov."

"He named a policeman. If Uzeyir Jafarov grounds it, investigations will be carried out. Otherwise, no one can be held accountable. Necessary legal procedures have to be carried out for this. If the man's crime is proved, he will be held accountable irrespective of his post," he said.

Commenting on OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Miklos Haraszti's statement "Interior Minister Ramil Usubov sued journalists most" Ramil Usubov said that he has inaccurate information.

"I have not counted who sued journalists most. I do not think that I sued journalists most of all. I always state that everyone, including police should behave ethically. It especially concerns journalists," the Minister concluded, APA reports.
