It's difficult to estimate prospect of Azerbaijan's NATO membership, OSCE top official says

21 April 2007 [15:15] - TODAY.AZ
It is difficult to estimate the prospects of Azerbaijan's NATO membership. I can not give any advice neither to Azerbaijani government, nor Azeri people. Oil and gas-rich Azerbaijan is of great strategical importance. This is a long process, it has its procedures and standards, said Bruce George, president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

"I would not like to comment on the prospects of Azerbaijan's integration into NATO. This country has its own interests in terms of national security issues, and Azerbaijan pursues policy in order to create balance between West and Russia. Azerbaijani government takes into account the interest of their people and specific characteristics of the country. Just Azeris and Georgians are to decide whether to become NATO member. I am glad that Georgia supports this decision," the president told the APA.

Bruce George noted that Georgia is developing considerable after the revolution in the country.

"Reforms have been carried out in various spheres of the country and the temp of economic growth is high. There are great prospects for Azerbaijan to develop. Azerbaijani can become flourishing and powerful. For this, it is necessary to use the resources of the country clever," OSCE PA president underscored.
