Musavat not to boycott 2008 presidential elections

20 April 2007 [11:21] - TODAY.AZ
"There is no use of boycotting 2008 presidential elections beforehand. The parties wishing the elections to be held according to the legislation should work in the direction of making amendments to the election legislation and establishing democratic situation," said Arif Hajili, chief of Musavat Party Central Office.

He told the APA that Musavat is against boycotting and will struggle for changing the political situation in the country.

"The demands on organizing elections commissions on parity principles and demands on Public Television at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) show that positive steps will be taken in this direction by January, 2008," he said.

Hajili said that the government opposes to it and added if political forces in the country demand the same, progress can be achieved in this.

"Unless the commissions are set up on parity principles, we dot not intend to be represented in the current commissions. Those who accuse us of demonstrating wrong position should understand that Musavat's decision on refusing the participation in the commissions caused international organizations' discussing the issue on election commissions," he said.
