"Important results have been achieved in adoption and application of laws since Venice Commission started cooperation with Azerbaijan from 1996 up to now.

"But the problems on improving the law on freedom of assembly and election code remain unsolved," Secretary of the Council of Europe Venice Commission Giovanni Buquicchio told Azerbaijani journalists, APA correspondent reports.

Noting that there is a need for reforms in the judicial system of Azerbaijan, Mr.Buquicchio also touched upon the formation of election commissions.

"The composition of election commissions is to satisfy all political forces," he said.

Buquicchio said he is satisfied with the cooperation with Azerbaijani government on the law on freedom of assembly.

"Azerbaijani government wants to solve the problem. But there is divergence in some problems. The correct application of this law can play an important role in holding free and fair elections in Azerbaijan in 2008," he said.

The secretary drew attention to the importance of extending Azerbaijani parliament's authorities and achieving balance between all branches of the government.
