Azerbaijani government to submit amended bill on freedom of assembly to Venice Commission

05 April 2007 [19:50] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani government will submit the amended variant of the draft law on freedom of peaceful assembly to the Venice Commission in April.

Spokesperson for Venice Commission Alain Chablais told the APA that the Venice Commission along with Azerbaijani government will try to analyze official judgment of the bill, after getting acquainted with its new variant.

"We will know whether Azerbaijani government will want our official opinion. If Azerbaijan agrees, our experts will give opinion whether the bill conforms to European standards. Then the opinion will be sent to Baku. Following this, the Venice Commission experts and Azerbaijani government will specify where they will meet," he said.

Alain Chablais said that the meeting can take place either in Baku in June or in Venice in September. But he said there is less likelihood that they will meet in June.

"The meeting will possibly take place in the framework of the plenary session of the Venice Commission in September," he said.
