Clearing Agstafa from mines and UXOs to end in the first half of 2008

Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) plan to finish clearing the village of Saloglu of Agstafa region from unexploded ordnances (UXO) in the first half of 2008, director of ANAMA Nazim Ismayilov told.

He said that about 1,000 UXOs are cleared from the territory of the village every day. About 100 sappers are involved in clearing. Ismayilov said that 562 hectare area is to be cleared in the framework of the project "Saloglu" financed by NATO and Azerbaijani government.

ANAMA detected 1,249,801 sq m area in March and neutralized 27,848 mines and UXOs, APA reports.

Generally, 46,596,766 sq m Azerbaijani area was cleared and 167,060 mines and UXOs were neutralized. Mine accidents in Azerbaijan have killed 53 and injured 122 since September, 2001.
