23 February 2006 [08:36] - TODAY.AZ
"Russia is ready to act as a mediator to reconcile Azerbaijan and Armenia, and regulate the Nagorno Karabakh Conflict," said Sergey Prikhodko, aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin on international issues.

Calling Azerbaijan and Armenia friend countries, Mr. Prikhodko stated that Baku and Yerevan were interested in resolution of the conflict, APA reports.

"We approve of Azerbaijan and Armenia's any meetings one by one and through Minsk Group. But the initiators should be conflicting sides themselves," he said.

Mr. Prikhodko thinks that the conflict solution time depends on a number of factors.

"How much the sides are ready for compromise, Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents' maneuver potential, how much the two peoples support their leaders in seeking compromise, how much the world community is ready to support the attempts and other factors".

However, Mr. Prikhodko thinks that sides' confrontation has passed military phase.

"Military operations have not been conducted in Karabakh for years. It is the great result of the two country leaders".

Mr. Prikhodko stressed that peaceful resolution of the conflict should be the priority afterward.
