High ranking member of the ruling party comments on chances of the opposition in the upcoming elections

21 October 2005 [11:13] - TODAY.AZ
Opposition's stands are weak among people and it will not be able to gain their votes, thinks the deputy of an executive secretary of the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan [New Azerbaijan] Party Siyavush Novruzov.

“Current opposition is weak and will not keep its promise to boycott the Parliamentary elections”, thinks Novruzov. However, he does not exclude the possibility of the opposition taking such a step at the last moment in order to conceal its weak stands among population of Azerbaijan.

“Their success is hard to believe in since the people of Azerbaijan know well, what the opposition is capable of”, Novruzov said. "During previous elections various groups among the opposition also decided to boycott elections. The result was evident”, noted sarcastically deputy of the executive secretary of Yeni Azerbaijan.

At the end Novruzov declared that over 2000 candidates are involved in the elections and 1600 are independent candidates. However, Novruzov’s data is slightly incorrect since only yesterday the Central Election Commission announced that only 1993 candidates remain campaigning in the election’s race.
