The foreign affairs minister Elmar Mammadyarov was on a business visit in Strasbourg on June 15-16, 2005.
According to the information entered APA from the press-center of FAM, meetings were held during the visit with the General Secretary of Council of Europe Terry Davis, the general secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) Bruna Haller and general director of the PACE secretariat M.Sorinas, and with the members of the Monitoring Group on Azerbaijan and Armenia of the Ministers Committee of Council of Europe (AGO Group). An exchange of views on peace negotiations in the direction of solving the Upper Garabagh conflict, the existing situation in the country on the eve of the parliamentary elections to be held on
November of this year, organizing a working group consisting of the representatives of the government, parliament and non-governmental organizations for the purpose of reviewing the trials of the persons treated as “political prisoners” and the future activity of this working group, the last steps in the direction of the democratizing process in the country, and other similar questions was held in the meeting with T.Davis. E.Mammadyarov invited the general secretary to visit Azerbaijan. T.Davis highly valued this invitation and said that he would review his possibilities to realize this visit soon.
The exchange of views on the “Activity of the democratic institutions in Azerbaijan” and “Continuation to be given to the order # 1359(2004) on the political prisoners in Azerbaijan” reports included in the agenda of the session of PACE to be held on June 20-24, works realized for holding the upcoming parliamentary elections in accordance with the international standards, measures conducted by the authority of Azerbaijan in the field of ensuring the pre-eminence of law and human rights was held in the meeting with the general secretary of PACE B.Haller and the general director of PACE secretariat M.Sorinas.
Discussions on the Upper Garabagh conflict and the parliamentary elections were also held in the meeting with the members of the AGO Monitoring group conducted with the participation of the permanent representatives of Germany, Turkey, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Latvia, Austria, Greece and the representatives of the secretariat of Council of Europe. E.Mammadyarov informed his interlocutors about the position of the authority of Azerbaijan on definite questions in the meeting.
