Georgia, EU to mull free trade

Negotiations between Georgia and the European Union on an agreement on comprehensive free trade will begin in a month, European Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht said in Brussels after the start of negotiations was officially announced.

Gucht expressed confidence that it will be important not only for the EU, but also for Georgia. "This concerns not only tariffs, services or products, but also compliance with the laws that will bring Georgia and the EU together," Gucht said.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in turn, said that it is an important point in terms of the "Eastern Partnership". "Poland is glad that all this happens during its presidency in the EU. Integration of Georgian economy into the EU will be a strong factor also in the restoration of Georgia's territorial integrity. It is very good news for Georgia, Poland and the EU," Sikorski said. Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri headed negotiations with the EU delegation.
