Some 912 prisoners pardoned in Iran

15 November 2011 [15:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran has agreed to a request forwarded by the country’s judiciary chief to grant clemency to hundreds of prisoners on the occasion of Islamic festivities, Iran’s Press TV reported.

On Monday, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei agreed to either pardoning or commutation of jail sentences of 912 Iranian prisoners on the respective occasions of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Qadir, the Khamnei’s website reported. The decision was made in response to a relevant request from Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani. The pardoning decree concerned the political, military and civilian prisoners.

Eid al-Qadir is the anniversary commemorating the last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on March 10, 632 AD at the Pond of Khumm in Saudi Arabia. The sermon, which was attended by tens of thousands of Muslims performing Hajj, saw the Prophet of Islam appointing Imam Ali (PBUH) as his successor.
