Police among eight dead in Turkish bombing

19 October 2011 [10:00] - TODAY.AZ
A roadside bomb killed five police officers and three civilians in the eastern Turkish province of Bitlis, the governor said Tuesday, DPA reported.

Two children, aged 4 and 13, were among the fatalities, Governor Nurettin Yilmaz told reporters.

He did not say who was responsible, but the bombing was presumed to be the work of the Kurdish rebel group, the PKK, which has been blamed for a series of attacks since ending its ceasefire in June.

The bomb was set in a culvert next to a road in the town of Guroymak. A remote-control device was used to detonate it as a mini-bus was passing, the semi-official Anatolian Agency quoted the governor as saying.

The blast wounded four civilians, three of them seriously.
