South Korean protestor spends 200 days on crane

01 August 2011 [11:37] - TODAY.AZ
A South Korean female protestor is celebrating 200 days living on top of a 35-metre crane.

Kim Jin-Suk is protesting over 400 job cuts by major shipping company Hanikan Heavy Industries and Construction in the South Korea city of Busan.

The crane where Jin-Suk began her protest was chosen for its poignant significance, being the location of a trade unionist's suicide several years ago over a similar dispute.

"I came up here in the winter, it's summer now and very hot," she said, according to BBC News. "There's no electricity, it's a very confined space. I can't read books and I can't wash.

"But I'm here on behalf of the workers who are being laid off," she added, saying that she will not come down until the workers' jobs are saved. "If that can be rectified, and the lay-offs withdrawn, I can come down any time."

In June, the leaders of a local workers' union seemingly reached an agreement to provide those being laid off with more compensation. However, over 100 protestors are continuing the strike to save their jobs.
