15% of Iran's population can neither read nor write

Despite the 32-year fight against illiteracy in Iran, 2.6 million people still can not read or write, said chairman of the Iranian Education Movement Ali Bagirzadeh. Mehr agency reported that according to Bagirzade, 85% of the population is educated and all efforts aimed at to teach the remaining 15% to read and write.

"We tried to use the services of the private sector to strengthen the education system of the country" - said Bagirzade.

According to him, mostly illiterate population aged 10 to 49 years. "The five-year development plan is focused on necessary measures to eliminate the illiteracy", - said Bagirzade.

Earlier, the movement stated that each year around one million people in the country are deprived of education.

Deputy Chairman of the movement Ibrahimian said that the country has 14.2 million illiterate people, most of them were women.
