Iran Sets tons of drugs on fire

10 March 2011 [11:28] - TODAY.AZ
Over 10 tons of different types of illicit drugs discovered and seized from drug-traffickers in various operations were set on fire in Iran's Southern province of Hormozgan on Wednesday, a provincial official announced, Fars news agency reported.

"10,358 kg of narcotics discovered and seized by the law enforcement, intelligence and the IRGC (the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps) forces were set on fire today," Secretary of the Drug-Campaign Coordination Council of Hormozgan province Mohammad Ali Akhoundi told reporters.

He said a major part of the cargo which went on fire today consisted of hashish, while the rest included 45kg of opium and 103 kg of crack (condensed heroin).

Akhoundi further said that security and intelligence forces in Hormozgan have seized 46 tons of different types of illicit drugs in the current Iranian year (ending on March 21), adding that 20 tons of the drug cargos have been seized by the intelligence and IRGC forces.

He stated that provincial security forces have also disbanded 155 rings involved in drug-trafficking activities during the said period.

On Tuesday, Iran destroyed 40 tons of illicit drugs in the capital city of Tehran in a ceremony attended by the Iranian Interior Minster Mostafa Mohammad Najjar.

Addressing the ceremony, Mohammad Najjar said Iran's law enforcement police forces have seized over 400 tons of different types of narcotics during the current Iranian year.

Mohammad Najjar stressed that the country's police have initiated new methods in the fight against drug-trafficking.

He further announced that a sum of, at least, 100 tons more of drugs would also go on fire by the end of March.

According to the UNODC, these days, 93 percent of the world's opium is produced in the neighboring Afghanistan, 60 per cent of which is destined for the EU and specially US markets. And the main transit route is Iran, where the country's dedicated police squad risk their lives to make the most discoveries of drug cargoes, disband drug-trafficking gangs and organizations and much more in a bid to rescue not only the Iranian youth but also all those living in Europe and the US.
