Champion gardener stopped by police over giant vegetables

10 September 2010 [12:30] - TODAY.AZ
A champion gardener was pulled over by police on the way to a show because his giant vegetables were making his car unstable. Medwyn Williams had his van loaded with prize veg on a 350-mile trip to a top show when it was pulled over by traffic cops. Green-fingered Medwyn, 60, was told the super-size onions, marrows, leeks and carrots had made the van unsafe.

He was forced to unload baskets of vegetables at the side of the road before police allowed him to continue his journey from Anglesey in Wales to Dundee, Scotland. But Medwyn, chairman of the National Vegetable Society, proved his knew his onions - by scooping the gold medal for the best exhibits in the annual show. Medwyn was on his way from his home on Llanfairpwll, Anglesey, to the show with son Alwyn in the driving seat when a Tayside police patrol pulled him over at Perth.

Medwyn said: "We had to leave loads of vegetables behind and had to return to pick them up later.

"It's the first time I've had any problems in 15 years of exhibiting at shows all over the country.

"I've been all over, even driving into the middle of London and never had spot of bother"

Son Alwyn, 38, had his name and address taken for allegedly overloading a vehicle. At this year's Chelsea Flower Show he won the President's Award for the best display with a 42-variety vegetable arrangement - and his 11th gold medal. Medwyn took no chances on the return trip from Scotland - he gave the extra loads away in exchange for a bottle of scotch.

Tayside Police said: "A man had been charged with a driving offence."
