On May 29th at 13:00 (local time), a picket will be held on one of the central streets of Baku.
The protest is to stop the violence against the street animals, according to the Project Coordinator of the Society for the living environment and ethical education "Alliance" Sumara Aliyeva.

"We will conduct sanctioned rally in front of the Baku Zoo in protest against cruelty to animals. We want to convey our voice to the authorities, and ask the state to see and hear us, so they can help us to protect the rights of animals and stop the mistreatment of these poor things", she said.

Aliyeva also reminded that in May of 2007, Azerbaijan joined the European Convention for the Protection of Animals, but no significant changes happened after that. That's why they call all the animal rights groups to join them, to take part in the picket, and thereby express their protest against cruelty to animals.

"One of our goals - is to close the so-called "dog box" - a specialized Office of Sanitation and public services in the Executive Power of Baku city workers, who cruelly kill homeless animals on the street in front of people. We are against it," Aliyeva said.

According to Aliyeva, "there are more humane ways of lulling and sterilization of stray animals. If the animal is furious, it can be put to sleep. If there is no danger coming from the animal, it can be sterilized, and the number of homeless animals will be reduced. And what does "dog box" do? They once killed a poor stray dog right in front of a child who was feeding it!".

"We demand that the state allocate us a territory where we will create a shelter for homeless animals, as in civilized European countries," stressed Aliyeva.
