Iran re-elected as vice-chair of OPCW executive council

31 March 2010 [11:19] - TODAY.AZ
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been re-elected as vice-chair of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Iranian Embassy in The Hague said on Tuesday.
Representatives of the OPCW's Asian group voted for a new term for Iran's permanent representative to the OPCW Kazem Gharib-Abadi who is also Iran's Ambassador to the Netherlands.

Reacting to his re-election, Gharib-Abadi pledged to strongly represent Asian interests at the 41-member OPCW executive council.

Being a major victim of Iraq's murderous chemical attacks in the 1980s, Iran has been a member since the creation of the OPCW and has also played a leading role in the group's campaign for a global ban of chemical weapons.

There are a total of 186 members in the OPCW.
